Team discovers new inhibitors of estrogen-dependent breast cance...

(University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) Researchers have discovered a new family of agents that inhibit the growth of estrogen-dependent breast cancer cells. The finding, described today at a meeting of the Endocrine Society, has opened an avenue of research into new drugs to combat estrogen-dependent breast cancers.

Study suggests chemotherapy diminishes fertility in breast cance...

(Dana-Farber Cancer Institute) Pre-menopausal breast cancer survivors who were treated with chemotherapy following surgery were more likely to have diminished ovarian reserve -- the capacity of the ovaries to provide eggs capable of being fertilized -- compared to women who have never had breast cancer, according to a study led by Dana-Farber Cancer Institute investigators. Their findings will be presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology

Molecular 'clock' could predict risk for developing breast cance...

(UT Southwestern Medical Center) A chemical reaction in genes that control breast cancer provides a molecular clock that could one day help researchers more accurately determine a woman's risk for developing breast cancer and provide a new approach for treatment, UT Southwestern Medical Center researchers have found.

Genome analysis reveals new protein associated with breast cance...

A novel systems-based approach that combines comprehensive gene expression profiling with genome-wide transcription factor analysis and protein-protein interaction has led researchers to an important genetic marker that can help physicians know which breast cancer patients are at highest risk and will require more aggressive treatment.

Patients with breast cancer who developed anemia during chemotherapy had nearly three times the risk of local recurrence as those who did not, according to a study published in the April 1 issue of Clinical Cancer Research¸ a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

A recent e-mail chain has some people concerned about grapefruit. The messages refer to a 2007 study in The British Journal of Cancer that found an increased risk of breast cancer among postmenopausal women who ate large amounts of grapefruit.

New revelations in epigenetic control shed light on breast cance...

Epigenetic regulation -- modifications to the structure of chromatin that influence which genes are expressed in a cell -- is a key player in embryonic development and cancer formation. Researchers at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg now gained new insight into one crucial epigenetic mechanism and reveal that it acts much faster than assumed. In this week's issue of Nature they report that estrogen causes rapid epigenetic changes in breast cancer cells.
