(University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center) Breast cancer patients and their physicians may make more informed, long-term treatment decisions using risk assessment strategies to help determine probability of recurrence, a research team led by scientists at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center reported in the Aug. 12 online issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Curcumin as a Cancer Treatment

The Daily Herald has an interesting article up by Dr. Patrick Massey about curcumin, which may turn out to be the first natural anticancer therapy. Clinical trails at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center have shown that curcumin may inhibit growth in the pancreatic cancer cells of some patients.

"Curcumin comes from the spice turmeric. It contains a number of compounds that have potent anti-inflammatory properties as well as anti-cancer potential. In the test tube, as well as in laboratory mice, curcumin has been shown to slow or even kill tumor cells."

Once suspect protein found to promote DNA repair, prevent cancer

(University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center) An abundant chromosomal protein that binds to damaged DNA prevents cancer development by enhancing DNA repair, researchers at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center report online this week in the Proceedings of the National Academies of Science.

TG2 identified as potential therapeutic target in chemo-resistan...

(University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center) M. D. Anderson researchers connect overexpression of tissue type transglutaminase with poor prognosis in ovarian cancer, identify the relevant pathway, and shut TG2 down with an siRNA liposomal nanoparticle. They previously pinpointed TG2's role in resistant and metastatic melanoma and breast and pancreatic cancers. This crucial protein fuels different cancers through different pathways.

(University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center) Thyroid cancer that has spread to distant sites has a poor prognosis, but an experimental drug that inhibits tumor blood vessel formation can slow disease progression in some patients, a research team led by investigators from The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center reports in the July 3 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine.

(American Association for Cancer Research) People who have never smoked but whose cells cannot efficiently repair environmental insults to DNA are at higher risk of developing lung cancer than those with effective genomic repair capability, according to researchers from the department of epidemiology at the University of Texas M.

(University of Texas M. D.
