The protein REST protects the pluripotentiality and self-renewal of embryonic stem cells by suppressing a specific microRNA.

The basic finding by researchers at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center has implications for regenerative medicine.

The new research builds on earlier work connecting the protein to medulloblastoma -- an aggressive childhood brain cancer.
