UH engineers finding new ways to fight malaria with DOD grant

(University of Houston) With resistance to existing antimalarial drugs on the rise, there is a renewed push to find different ways to fight it.

Two University of Houston engineers have stepped up to the plate to answer the call. Professors Jeffery Rimer and Peter Vekilov, both with the department of chemical and biomolecular engineering, were awarded a grant from the US Department of Defense to create an entirely new platform for developing antimalarial drugs.

(Clemson University) A Clemson biochemist has received grants totaling $787,000 to study how cells repair damaged DNA, which can cause cancer and genetic illnesses.

The US Department of Defense and the National Institutes of Health awarded Weiguo Cao three-year funding to investigate two DNA repair pathways.
