UCSF team finds new source of immune cells during pregnancy

EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health  Wed, 12/15/2010 - 23:00

(University of California - San Francisco) UCSF researchers have shown for the first time that the human fetal immune system arises from an entirely different source than the adult immune system, and is more likely to tolerate than fight foreign substances in its environment.

Blocking cancer in its path: New cellular defect discovered

EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health  Mon, 03/15/2010 - 22:00

(University of California - San Francisco) UCSF researchers have discovered that a key cellular defect that disturbs the production of proteins in human cells can lead to cancer susceptibility.

The scientists also found that a new generation of inhibitory drugs offers promise in correcting this defect.

UCSF scientists illuminate how microRNAs drive tumor progression

EurekAlert! - Cancer  Tue, 09/15/2009 - 22:00

(University of California - San Francisco) UCSF researchers have identified collections of tiny molecules known as microRNAs that affect distinct processes critical for the progression of cancer.

The findings, they say, expand researchers' understanding of the important regulatory function of microRNAs in tumor biology and point to new directions for future study and potential treatments.
