(Elsevier Health Sciences) Poorly managed pain in the neonatal intensive care unit has serious short- and long-term consequences, causing physiological and behavioral instability in preterm infants and long-term changes in their pain sensitivity, stress arousal systems, and developing brains.

In a study published in the November issue of PAINĀ®, researchers report that breastfeeding during minor procedures mitigated pain in preterm neonates with mature breastfeeding behaviors.

However, other aspects, such as quality of life, pain, and long-term consequences of the disease are still insufficiently investigated in studies.

This is the conclusion of the Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care in its final report published in October 2009 and for which an English-language summary is now available.
