Starve a virus, feed a cure?

EurekAlert! - Infectious and Emerging Diseases  Sat, 02/11/2012 - 23:00

(University of Rochester Medical Center) A protein that protects some of our immune cells from the most common and virulent form of HIV works by starving the virus of the molecular building blocks that it needs to replicate.

While researchers hope the work will one day lead to a way to make anti-HIV drugs more effective by increasing their potency against the virus, they're also excited about its implications for our knowledge of other pathogens, such as herpes viruses.

EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health  Tue, 01/03/2012 - 23:00

(University of Chicago Medical Center) In a study to be published online Jan. 4, 2012, in the journal Pediatrics, researchers from the University of Chicago, the Harvard School of Public Health and the University of Rochester Medical Center compared three common methods for calculating expected body weight of adolescents with eating disorders and found that the body mass index percentile method is recommended for clinical and research purposes.

Scientists fixate on Ric-8 to understand trafficking of popular ...

EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health  Tue, 12/27/2011 - 23:00

(University of Rochester Medical Center) Half the drugs used today target a single class of proteins - and now scientists have identified an important molecular player critical to the proper workings of those proteins critical to our health.

What you see, what you smell, how you feel - molecules known as G-protein coupled receptors and their prime targets, G proteins, are key to those and many other processes that are ubiquitous in our bodies, and Ric-8 plays a vital role.

US patent awarded for Rochester's pioneering HPV vaccine work

EurekAlert! - Cancer  Mon, 11/21/2011 - 23:00

(University of Rochester Medical Center) The University of Rochester has been awarded a US patent for research essential to both human papillomavirus vaccines on the market.

The patent is for the creation of virus-like particles that mimic HPV 16, the type of HPV that causes the majority of all cancers related to HPV.

Rochester study: Age a big factor in prostate cancer deaths

EurekAlert! - Cancer  Tue, 10/18/2011 - 22:00

(University of Rochester Medical Center) Contrary to common belief, men age 75 and older are diagnosed with late-stage and more aggressive prostate cancer and thus die from the disease more often than younger men, according to a University of Rochester analysis published online this week by the journal, Cancer.

Study links drinking pattern to alcohol’s effect on heart healt...

EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health  Tue, 09/06/2011 - 22:00

(University of Rochester Medical Center) New research shows that patterns of alcohol consumption - a drink or two every night, or several cocktails on Friday and Saturday nights only - may be more important in determining alcohol's influence on heart health than the total amount consumed.

Scientists found that daily moderate drinking - the equivalent of two drinks per day, seven days a week - decreased atherosclerosis in mice, while binge drinking - seven drinks a day, two days a week - increased atherosclerosis.

URMC and Temple announce drug discovery partnership

EurekAlert! - Infectious and Emerging Diseases  Wed, 08/17/2011 - 22:00

(University of Rochester Medical Center) The University of Rochester Medical Center and Temple University School of Pharmacy have announced a partnership that will help translate novel medical research into new drugs for treating diseases.

Rochester autism researchers present new findings at IMFAR

EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health  Thu, 05/12/2011 - 22:00

(University of Rochester Medical Center) Much about autism is unknown, but researchers from the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) are working to learn more about the neurodevelopmental disorder and its most effective treatments.

A team of researchers from URMC joins researchers from across the world in San Diego this week for the 10th annual International Meeting for Autism Research (IMFAR).

Rochester researchers are presenting on complementary medicine-use rates, nutritional insufficiencies and how artificial food dye might affect children with autism.

Scientists find a key to maintaining our DNA

EurekAlert! - Cancer  Thu, 03/17/2011 - 22:00

(University of Rochester Medical Center) Maintaining the integrity of our DNA is a critical, yet complex part of the aging process.

Scientists have discovered how DNA maintenance is regulated, opening the door to interventions that may enhance the body's natural preservation of genetic information.

The findings may help researchers delay the onset of aging and disease by curbing the loss or damage of our genetic makeup, which makes us more susceptible to cancers and neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's.

Unexpected find opens up new front in effort to stop HIV

EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health  Sat, 01/22/2011 - 23:00

(University of Rochester Medical Center) HIV adapts in a surprising way to survive and thrive in its hiding spot within the human immune system, scientists have learned.

The the finding helps explain why HIV remains such a formidable foe after three decades of research, and it offers scientists a new, unexpected way to try to stop the virus.
