(University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine) A third of breast cancer survivors who received the breast-conserving treatments lumpectomy and radiation rate the appearance of their post-treatment breast as only "fair" or "poor" in comparison to their untreated breast, according to a new Penn Medicine study that will be presented today at the Annual Meeting of the American Society for Radiation Oncology.

Additionally, one fifth of patients report complications including chronic pain in their breast or arm and loss of arm or shoulder flexibility following their treatment.


 

Rutgers to collaborate in $3.4 million effort to improve prostat...

(Rutgers University) Rutgers University and two collaborators have received a $3.4 million research grant to develop tools aimed at improving the identification of prostate cancer using MRI.

The five-year grant, with funding in the first two years from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, was awarded by NIH under an initiative to promote industry and academic partnerships.

Rutgers is working with Penn Medicine and Siemens on this pioneering research.

(University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine) The Lance Armstrong Foundation and Penn Medicine announced today a four-year partnership to further develop and disseminate the LIVESTRONG Care Plan Powered by Penn Medicine's OncoLink.

This free service gives cancer survivors, their families and physicians the ability to create an individualized plan of care using up-to-date treatment information based on Institute of Medicine recommendations, as well educating them about their options to maintain optimal health once they are out of treatment.
