Study: Off-campus college party hosts drink more than attendees

EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health  Mon, 01/23/2012 - 23:00

(Ohio State University) On any given weekend, at least 10 percent of students at a single college could be hosting a party, and on average, party hosts who live off campus are drinking more and engaging in more alcohol-related problem behaviors than are the students attending their bashes, research suggests.

In contrast, hosts of parties held on campus tend to drink less than do the students attending their gatherings, according to the study.

Focus on testing hurts students in high school health classes

EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health  Mon, 11/14/2011 - 23:00

(Ohio State University) High school health classes fail to help students refuse sexual advances or endorse safe sex habits when teachers focus primarily on testing knowledge, a new study reveals.

But when teachers emphasized learning the material for its own sake, and to improve health, students had much better responses. In these kinds of classrooms, students had lower intentions of having sex and felt better able to navigate sexual situations.

EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health  Tue, 10/25/2011 - 22:00

(Ohio State University) Preschool children with relatively poor language skills improve more if they are placed in classrooms with high-achieving students, a new study found.

Researchers found that children with relatively poor language skills either didn't improve over the course of one academic year, or actually lost ground in development of language skills, when they were placed with other low-achieving students.

Ohio State organizes research sharing between Brazil, US

EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health  Mon, 10/03/2011 - 22:00

(Ohio State University Medical Center) Scientists from Brazil and the United States will discuss scientific studies of mutual interests and explore future partnerships at a three-day symposium in Washington on Oct. 24-26.

Scientists design nano-sized drug transporter to fight disease

EurekAlert! - Cancer  Mon, 07/25/2011 - 22:00

(Ohio State University) Scientists seeking to improve cancer treatments have created a tiny drug transporter that maximizes its ability to silence damaging genes by finding the equivalent of an expressway into a target cell.

The transporter, called a nanocarrier, is a lipid-based structure containing a piece of RNA. Lipids are fatty molecules that help maintain the structure of cell membranes.

Infants learn to transfer knowledge by 16 months, study finds

EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health  Mon, 07/04/2011 - 22:00

(Ohio State University) Researchers have identified when an important milestone in infants' development occurs: the ability to transfer knowledge to new situations.

In a series of studies, the researchers found that 8-month-olds had trouble using newly acquired knowledge in a different circumstance, but 16-month-olds could do so.

Astronomers reach for the stars to discover new cancer therapy

EurekAlert! - Cancer  Thu, 06/23/2011 - 22:00

(Ohio State University) Astronomers' research on celestial bodies may have an impact on the human body. Ohio State University astronomers are working with medical physicists and radiation oncologists to develop a potential new radiation treatment -- one that is intended to be tougher on tumors, but gentler on healthy tissue.

EurekAlert! - Infectious and Emerging Diseases  Tue, 05/31/2011 - 22:00

(Ohio State University) "What would Samantha and Miranda do?" That's what viewers of the past HBO series "Sex and the City" may ask themselves when faced with the prospect of uncomfortable discussions about sexual health with partners, friends and doctors.

Researchers found that college students were more than twice as likely to talk about sexual health issues with their partners after watching a "Sex and the City" episode.

EurekAlert! - Cancer  Mon, 01/24/2011 - 23:00

(Ohio State University) An Ohio State University mathematician and his colleagues are finding ways to tell the difference between healthy cells and abnormal cells, such as cancer cells, based on the way the cells look and move.

They are creating mathematical equations that describe the shape and motion of single cells for laboratory analysis.

Study identifies underlying dysfunction of seemingly non-critica...

EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health  Mon, 09/13/2010 - 22:00

(Nationwide Children's Hospital) Repairing small, seemingly benign holes in a child's heart may be more clinically important than previously thought, as dysfunction could be lurking out of sight.

These are the findings from a study conducted by doctors and researchers at Nationwide Children's Hospital and the Ohio State University Medical Center examining a subset of the most common form of congenital heart disease, ventricular septal defect.
