(University Health Network) A team of scientists from Princess Margaret Hospital have created an organic nanoparticle that is completely non-toxic, biodegradable and nimble in the way it uses light and heat to treat cancer and deliver drugs.

(A nanoparticle is a minute molecule with novel properties).

(Virginia Tech) The researcher will develop and use a novel sensing system called the "holey scaffold." It will characterize the three-dimensional and time dependent motion of a nanoparticle used in a treatment process.

It will also illustrate the dynamic, light-activated thermal and chemical response of the tumor to the nanoparticle-mediated laser therapy for varying nanoparticle properties and laser parameters within both in vitro and in vivo tumor systems.

Tracking new cancer-killing particles with MRI

EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health  Sun, 12/13/2009 - 23:00

(Rice University) Researchers at Rice University and Baylor College of Medicine have created a single nanoparticle that can be tracked in real time with MRI as it homes in on cancer cells, tags them with a fluorescent dye and kills them with heat.

The all-in-one particle is one of the first examples from a growing field called "theranostics" that develops technologies physicians can use to diagnose and treat diseases in a single procedure.
