Portuguese science scores high with American funder

(Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciencia) Five of the 28 scientists considered "people who, 10 years from now, will be the scientific leaders in their countries," by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, are working in Portugal.

HHMI's newest awardees were chosen from 760 candidates, from 18 countries. Each researcher secures $650,000 in funding over a five-year period to carry out research in such diverse areas as neuroscience, parasitology, aging and bacterial communication.

(Howard Hughes Medical Institute) Public health workers in Haiti are focusing their efforts on treating those with cholera-like symptoms and providing clean water and adequate sanitation to control the disease's spread.

In a New England Journal of Medicine editorial, vaccine and infectious disease experts note that safe and reasonably effective vaccines could complement these efforts, but are in short supply.

The United States should stockpile cholera vaccines for rapid deployment to high-risk parts of the world, the scientists say.


 

HHMI renews grant for Rice's global health program

(Rice University) The Howard Hughes Medical Institute today awarded a $1.2 million, four-year grant to continue Rice University's successful undergraduate global health program Beyond Traditional Borders.

In the first four years of the program, more than 10 percent of Rice's undergraduates have taken a BTB class.

BTB challenges students to devise practical solutions to real-world problems in the developing world.

(Howard Hughes Medical Institute) On Feb. 20, 2010, at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, HHMI investigator Owen Witte will discuss a new tool to understand how cancers grow -- and with it a new opportunity to identify novel cancer drugs.

Witte's team has been able to break apart human prostate tissue, extract the stem cells in that tissue, and alter those cells genetically so that they spur cancer.
