(MedPage Today) -- Older women who experience a hip fracture have a twofold increase in mortality risk in the first year after the fracture, researchers found.

Emergency room x-rays often miss the mark in diagnosing suspected hip and pelvic fractures, according to a retrospective review of patient records.

Among older men and women, a hip fracture increases the risk of death from any cause for at least 10 years after the injury, researchers said.
