Extended Lymph Node Excision Feasible in Gastric Cancer

MedPage Today Surgery  Tue, 01/24/2012 - 10:30

SAN FRANCISCO (MedPage Today) -- In patients with gastric cancer, laparoscopic gastrectomy that includes removal of lymph nodes outside the immediate area around the stomach offered "excellent" margin status and node retrieval, researchers reported here.

Gastric Ca Survival Rates Down, Chemo Use Up

MedPage Today Surgery  Mon, 01/23/2012 - 09:30

SAN FRANCISCO (MedPage Today) -- A decline in survival rates in stage IV gastric cancer coincides with the increased use of chemotherapy rather than radiation and surgery, researchers found.

Team discovers how a cancer-causing bacterium spurs cell death

EurekAlert! - Infectious and Emerging Diseases  Mon, 10/31/2011 - 22:00

(University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) Researchers report they have figured out how the cancer-causing bacterium Helicobacter pylori attacks a cell's energy infrastructure, sparking a series of events in the cell that ultimately lead it to self-destruct.H. pylori are the only bacteria known to survive in the human stomach.

Infection with the bacterium is associated with an increased risk of gastric cancer, the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide.

(World Journal of Gastroenterology) A research team from China developed short hairpin RNA against heparanase (HPA), and determined its effects on HPA expression and the malignant characteristics of gastric cancer cells.

Their study showed that stable knockdown of HPA can efficiently decrease the invasiveness, metastasis and angiogenesis of human gastric cancer cells.

In contrast, stable knockdown of HPA does not affect the cell proliferation.

Is short-term Celecoxib intervention a effective method for prev...

EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health  Tue, 10/27/2009 - 22:00

(World Journal of Gastroenterology) Helicobacter pylori has been accepted as an important pathogen inducing gastric cancer.

A research group from Taiwan investigated optimal intervention point of Celecoxib, to inhibit H. pylori-associated gastric carcinogenesis in Mongolian gerbils.

They found that short-term use resulted in less severe inflammation and inhibited the invasion degree of gastric cancer.

Therefore, Celecoxib could be used in the later stages of H. pylori infection to achieve safe and effective chemoprevention of gastric adenocarcinoma.

EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health  Thu, 09/24/2009 - 22:00

(World Journal of Gastroenterology) A research team from Japan investigated whether eradication of H. pylori in peptic ulcer patients prevented gastric cancer.

They found that eradication did not significantly reduce the incidence of cancer in their patients, who had a mean age of 52.9 years at registration, after a mean follow-up period of 5.6 years.

Magnets Aid Gastric Cancer Surgery

MedPage Today Surgery  Thu, 01/29/2009 - 11:28

TOKYO (MedPage Today) -- Endoscopic surgery to remove early gastric tumors can be made easier by the use of magnets, researchers here found.
