(Elsevier Health Sciences) The trefoil factor 3 (TFF3) protein protects and maintains the integrity of the epithelial surface in the normal breast.

New research has found that while TFF3 protein expression is higher in well-differentiated low grade tumors and therefore associated with features of a good prognosis, it has a more sinister role in breast cancer invasion and metastasis.

The report is published in the March issue of the American Journal of Pathology.

EurekAlert! - Cancer  Sun, 02/05/2012 - 23:00

(Elsevier Health Sciences) DNA sequencing to detect genetic mutations can aid in the diagnosis and selection of treatment for cancer.

Current methods of testing DNA samples, Sanger sequencing and pyrosequencing, occasionally produce complex results that can be difficult or impossible to interpret.

Scientists at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine have developed a free software program, Pyromaker, that can more accurately identify such complex genetic mutations.

Can breastfeeding reduce pain in preterm infants?

EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health  Tue, 10/18/2011 - 22:00

(Elsevier Health Sciences) Poorly managed pain in the neonatal intensive care unit has serious short- and long-term consequences, causing physiological and behavioral instability in preterm infants and long-term changes in their pain sensitivity, stress arousal systems, and developing brains.

In a study published in the November issue of PAIN®, researchers report that breastfeeding during minor procedures mitigated pain in preterm neonates with mature breastfeeding behaviors.
