(Elsevier Health Sciences) There may be less than 20,000 rhinoceros in the world and the populations of these animals age and become infirm, successful breeding becomes increasingly difficult.

In an article scheduled for publication in Theriogenology, An International Journal of Animal Reproduction, researchers from the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research, Berlin, Zoo Budapest and the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna, report on the first live birth of a rhinoceros resulting from artificial insemination with frozen and thawed semen.

(Elsevier Health Sciences) With childhood obesity increasing, school administrators and public health officials are reducing availability of sugar-sweetened beverages in schools.

In a study published in the November/December 2008 issue of the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior, researchers found that reduction or elimination of SSB from school menus has little effect on total consumption by adolescents.

(Elsevier Health Sciences) The damaging effects of smoking and smoke exposure can be seen at any age. Pediatricians have even noted these negative effects in various stages of infant development.

The consequences of maternal smoke exposure during pregnancy can range from higher rates of prematurity to increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome.

Two new studies and an accompanying editorial soon to be published in the Journal of Pediatrics examine several physical and behavioral effects of cigarette smoke exposure on infants.

(Elsevier Health Sciences) Childhood obesity can lead to type 2 diabetes, asthma, hypertension, sleep apnea and emotional distress.

Obese children and youth are likely to be obese as adults, experience more cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and stroke and incur higher healthcare costs.

In an article published in the December 2008 issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, researchers report that children living in inner city neighborhoods with higher "greenness" experienced lower weight gains compared to those in areas with less green space.

(Elsevier Health Sciences) While some reports indicate that changes to diet can reduce heart failure risk, few large, prospective studies have been conducted.

In a new study researchers observed over 14,000 participants for more than 13 years and found that whole grain consumption lowered HF risk, while egg and high-fat dairy consumption raised risk.

Other food groups did not directly affect HF risk. The results are published in the November 2008 issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.

(Elsevier Health Sciences) A panel of experts convened by the American Urological Association to develop a best practice statement reached a consensus that primary cryosurgery is an option for men who have clinically organ confined prostate cancer of any grade with negative metastatic evaluation.

Clinicians using cryosurgery are advised to review this best practice statement, which is published in the November 2008 issue of the Journal of Urology.
