(Elsevier Health Sciences) Cancer survivors die of non-cancer-related causes at much higher rates than the general public.

A commentary published in the March 2011 issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association examines the current evidence supporting nutrition recommendations for preventing cancer recurrence and managing chronic conditions prevalent in cancer survivors, as well as improving quality of life and decreasing health care costs.

The commentary also describes knowledge gaps and suggests future nutrition research directions.

Prostate cancer clinical stage does not predict recurrence

EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health  Sun, 11/21/2010 - 23:00

(Wiley-Blackwell) A new study challenges the current staging system that determines the extent or severity of prostate cancer that has not metastasized.

Published early online in Cancer, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, the study found that there is no link between localized prostate cancer's clinical stage and a patient's risk of cancer recurrence after having his prostate removed.

(Duke University Medical Center) Men who use statins to lower their cholesterol are 30 percent less likely to see their prostate cancer come back after surgery compared to men who do not use the drugs, according to researchers at Duke University Medical Center.

Researchers also found that higher doses of the drugs were associated with lower risk of recurrence.

(University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center) Evaluating its change over time, CA-125, the protein long-recognized for predicting ovarian cancer recurrence, now shows promise as a screening tool for early-stage disease, according to researchers at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

EurekAlert! - Cancer  Sun, 11/08/2009 - 23:00

(American Cancer Society) A new study finds that women treated for breast cancer are at higher risk of cancer recurrence if they have dense breasts.

Published in the Dec. 15, 2009, issue of Cancer, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, the study's results indicate that breast cancer patients with dense breasts may benefit from additional therapies following surgery, such as radiation.
