New approach to management of overeating in children

EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health  Tue, 12/06/2011 - 23:00

(University of California - San Diego) Overeating, whether in children or adults, often takes place even in the absence of hunger, resulting in weight gain and obesity.

Current methods to treat such overeating in youth focus on therapies that restrict what kids may eat, requiring them to track their food intake and engage in intensive exercise.

Kerri Boutelle, PhD, associate professor of psychiatry and pediatrics at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and colleagues are developing new ways to treat overeating in children and adults.

Old drugs find new target for treating brain tumor

EurekAlert! - Cancer  Thu, 11/17/2011 - 23:00

(University of California - San Diego) Scientists at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center, in collaboration with colleagues in Boston and South Korea, say they have identified a novel gene mutation that causes at least one form of glioblastoma, the most common type of malignant brain tumor.

New drug combo targets multiple cancers

EurekAlert! - Cancer  Tue, 11/15/2011 - 23:00

(University of California - San Diego) Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and Kyushu University Medical School say a novel combination of a specific sugar molecule with a pair of cell-killing drugs prompts a wide variety of cancer cell types to kill themselves, a process called apoptosis or programmed cell death.

(La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology) The La Jolla Institute for Allergy & Immunology has become the fifth organization in the prestigious Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine, joining colleagues from the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, the Scripps Research Institute, University of California, San Diego and the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute in the first-of-its-kind multi-institutional stem cell research collaboration.

Fail-safe system may lead to cures for inherited disorders

EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health  Wed, 09/14/2011 - 22:00

(University of California - San Diego) Scientists at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have uncovered a previously unknown fail-safe (compensatory) pathway that potentially protects the brain and other organs from genetic and environmental threats.

The discovery could provide new ways to diminish the negative consequences of genetic mutations and environmental toxins that cause neurological diseases and other maladies.
