(Mayo Clinic) A decrease in breast density, or the proportion of fibroglandular tissue depicted on the mammogram image, over a number of years is associated with decreased risk of breast cancer, researchers from the Mayo Clinic campus in Minnesota report at the American Association for Cancer Research 101st Annual Meeting 2010.

(American Cancer Society) A new study finds that women treated for breast cancer are at higher risk of cancer recurrence if they have dense breasts.

Published in the Dec. 15, 2009, issue of Cancer, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, the study's results indicate that breast cancer patients with dense breasts may benefit from additional therapies following surgery, such as radiation.
