Kidney damage and high blood pressure

EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health  Wed, 09/21/2011 - 22:00

(American Physiological Society) Scientists have now begun to understand kidney damage on a cellular level and how the activity of certain molecules in damaged kidneys contributes to salt and water retention in nephrotic syndrome.

Several new insights in this area of research are presented at an upcoming meeting.

The cellular intricacies of cystic fibrosis

EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health  Sun, 09/18/2011 - 22:00

(American Physiological Society) When researchers discovered the primary genetic defect that causes cystic fibrosis (CF) back in 1989, they opened up a new realm of research into treatment and a cure for the disease.

Since then, scientists have been able to clone the defective gene and study its effects in animals. Now researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have developed a technique for observing the defects at work in human tissue donated by patients with CF.

EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health  Sun, 06/12/2011 - 22:00

(American Physiological Society) A study in primates establishes the critical role that undernourishment in mothers-to-be and lactating females has in creating Type 2 diabetes in offspring.

EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health  Fri, 04/08/2011 - 22:00

(American Physiological Society) Bolli and colleagues are conducting the groundbreaking study, "Cardiac Stem Cell Infusion in Patients with Ischemic cardiOmyopathy (SCIPIO)," to perfect a technique for using a patient's own cardiac stem cells to regenerate dead heart muscle after a heart attack.

EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health  Tue, 11/17/2009 - 23:00

(American Physiological Society) Strength training exercises using dumbbells can reduce pain and improve function in the trapezius muscle among women suffering trapezius myalgia, a tenderness and tightness in the upper trapezius muscle.

The results are the latest findings from an ongoing Danish study aimed at reducing repetitive strain injury caused by office work.

Probiotic found to be effective treatment for colitis in mice

EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health  Sun, 10/25/2009 - 22:00

(American Physiological Society) The probiotic, Bacillus polyfermenticus, can help mice recover from colitis. Mice treated with B.P. during the non-inflammatory period of the disease had reduced rectal bleeding, their tissues were less inflamed and they gained more weight than mice that did not receive the treatment.

A woman in space

EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health  Mon, 10/05/2009 - 22:00

(American Physiological Society) In the early years of the "space race" (1957-1975) two men sought to test a scientifically simple yet culturally complicated theory: that women might be innately better suited for space travel than men.

In 1960 the thought of a woman in space was a radical one, and justifiably so. On the ground 75 percent of American women did not work outside the home, and females were banned from military flight service altogether.
