(Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) The grant will allow them to study the impacts of known chemical compounds on adult stem cells, providing the most substantive information to date on how many of the chemicals used every day around the world impact stem cells.

The work also will seek to develop a new predictive safety screening tool that manufacturers can use to test the toxicity of new chemical compounds on stem cells.

The test will be done without the use of animals and at speeds far faster than current tests.

Stem cells repair lung damage after flu infection

EurekAlert! - Infectious and Emerging Diseases  Wed, 10/26/2011 - 22:00

(Cell Press) Researchers have now identified and characterized adult stem cells that have the capacity to regenerate lung tissue.

The findings, which come from studies of isolated human stem cells and of mice infected with a particularly nasty strain of H1N1 influenza virus, could lead to new regenerative therapies for acute and chronic airway diseases, according to the report published in the Oct. 28th issue of the journal Cell, a Cell Press publication.

Stem cells, potential source of cancer-fighting T cells

EurekAlert! - Cancer  Mon, 09/19/2011 - 22:00

(Penn State) Adult stem cells from mice converted to antigen-specific T cells -- the immune cells that fight cancer tumor cells -- show promise in cancer immunotherapy and may lead to a simpler, more efficient way to use the body's immune system to fight cancer, according to Penn State College of Medicine researchers.

(Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center) For the first time, researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center have identified and isolated adult mammary stem cells in mice.

Long-term implications of this research may include the use of such cells to regenerate breast tissue, provide a better understanding of the role of adult stem cells in breast cancer development, and develop potential new targets for anti-cancer drugs.

Merlin protein found to control liver stem cells, prevent tumor ...

EurekAlert! - Cancer  Wed, 08/11/2010 - 22:00

(Massachusetts General Hospital) A protein known to be involved in a rare hereditary cancer syndrome may have a role in the regulation of liver stem cells and the development of liver cancer.

In the Aug. 15 issue of Genes & Development, a Massachusetts General Hospital research team describes finding that the protein called merlin, encoded by the NF2 gene, controls the activity of adult stem cells that give rise to the two major types of liver cells.
