9.3 The Benefits of Massage

Human beings in general respond with pleasure to a massage. Therefore, of the many known benefits of massage, relaxation and pleasure probably tops the list. In addition to promoting general wellbeing, massages are known to stimulate the release of endorphins, which are the body's own pain killer and stress reducer.

Massaging of soft tissues is also known to send signals, which are thought to be electrical in nature, to both the locality being massaged as well as to the whole body. These signals help heal injured muscles, stimulate circulation, boost the immune system, lessen pain and tension, and provide a calming effect. Massage also

  • promotes healing,
  • boosts energy,
  • provides relaxation,
  • improves mood,
  • relieves depression,
  • correct sleep disorders,
  • reduces stress,
  • enhances mental alertness, and
  • relieves chronic back pain.
