Before beginning a treatment process, an acupuncturist will typically check your pulse at different points in your wrist. He or she will also note your tongue's condition and the appearance of its coating. Your skin's texture and color, your overall posture, and other indicators of the condition of your health will also be recorded.
After the physical examination, you will be asked to recline on an examining table. The acupuncturist will then start inserting needles at various points along your body.
The process is not painful. You may feel a slight twinge as a needle is inserted. You may also not feel anything during the insertion process. Feelings of discomfort, if any, will go away soon after the needles are in place.
After all the needles are inserted, the acupuncturist will ask you to lie down and rest. The resting time may extend from 15 minutes to an hour. The whole process will help your body feel relaxed. You may even feel drowsy. At the end of the session, your acupuncturist will remove all needles.
Some acupuncture treatments use moxibustion, a process in which the needles are heated with dried mugwort herb called moxa. The warmth stimulates blood circulation and encourages the flow of qi.
Moxibustion is performed by burning dried moxa and holding them above the needles while they are being inserted. Moxa is also considered to have healing properties of its own.
Modern techniques in acupuncture include the use of weak electrical currents running through the needles during treatments.
